Secondary source: The event occurred on November 14, 1960, but Rockwell painted the scene in 1963 and published it in Look magazine in January 1964, more than three years after the fact. Rockwell was not present during Ruby Bridges' walk to school. He created the image based on news reports, photographs, and his own artistic perspective to make a statement on racial injustice. Instead of portraying the real Ruby Bridges directly from life, Rockwell used local residents Lynda Gunn and her cousin Anita Gunn as models to represent her. |
